Becoming a Breeder

To become a DOGS SA Registered Breeder, please contact the Dogs SA Office and you will be sent the relevant information about becoming a registered breeder. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Apply for an Ordinary or Joint financial membership of DOGS SA. Associate and Junior memberships are ineligible for application to become a registered breeder.
  2. Be recorded as the registered owner of a main registered pedigree bitch you intend to breed with. (As recorded on the pedigree) Please note, the ownership of the bitch intended for breeding must be identical to the ownership of the Prefix as applied for.
  3. An open book exam will need to be completed with a successful pass mark. When your open book exam is successfully completed you may then apply for a Prefix.
  4. A prefix is a name by which a registered breeder is identified and becomes the first word of a puppy’s registered name and identifies all dogs bred by you. For example, the Prefix ‘HIGHFIELD’ and puppy name ‘GOLD MAGIC’ then becomes the full registered name of the puppy being ‘HIGHFIELD GOLD MAGIC’.  Up to eight choices of Prefix Name are required on the prefix application. If you submit only one or two names and those names are rejected by DOGS AUSTRALIA, you are required to submit additional names which will result in a delay in the approval of your Prefix Name.
  5. Please note, common names, place names, breed names, business names and names which include your first name/surname will not be granted. A Prefix Name must be one word of 4 letters up to a maximum of 12 letters. After approval by Dogs Australia, you will be notified of the Prefix Name granted and you are then eligible to submit an application to register a litter.
  6. As a member of Dogs SA you sign to agree and abide by the Constitution and Rules and Regulations of Dogs SA and as a Registered Breeder it is important to become familiar with the Dogs SA Rules and in particular Part IV - Registration and Part XV A. Code of Ethics for Members.

More information

Note: Once you become a member of DOGS SA and in accordance with the Regulations you may only breed with pedigree dogs registered on the Main Register of the DOGS AUSTRALIA. All puppies in a litter must be registered on the Main or Limited Register and must be transferred to their new owners with 14 days of disposition.

As a DOGS SA Registered Breeder, under no circumstances are you permitted to advertise or sell puppies 'without papers’ or breed any dogs which are not registered on the Main Register with DOGS AUSTRALIA.

All identified breaches of the Rules and Regulations are reported to the Dogs SA Investigations Panel for investigation and appropriate action.

As a Registered Breeder you are required to become familiar with any hereditary diseases which may affect your breed. Some breeds require health testing prior to considering for breeding and must either pass or be clear of hereditary diseases.  Please refer to the DOGS AUSTRLIA website Regulations - Part 6 The Register and Registration for a full list of health testing requirements for particular breeds.

The DOGS AUSTRALIA National Canine Health & Wellbeing Committee works to improve breeders’ awareness of, and the ability to reduce hereditary disease.
